"Born Again"

I wake
Just to sleep again
I leave the house
Just to return again
You looked at me in a lucid dream
And said “I don’t know you anymore”
And it was true
You didn’t

But I’ve been thinking about how I miss you
Before you became stranger—a stranger—
In the waterfall with the yellow rocks
In torn raincoats and thorny doubts
Your hair,
Saturated
By color and sweat

With big smiles
Climbing tall
There was no fear
That our love would falter
Because life felt…
So new

We clawed deeper
And deeper
Yes, deeper yet
Til our skin became bloodied
Our bodies, unearthly
And our sin,
Then a cord cut from our creator,
Declared us “born again”

But I have to admit
I can't live with it
Or in its absence
Whatever it is

So I’ll return to that lucid dream
With the waterfall shielding me
And I’ll embrace this view before my final rest
Before my body hits—
And I wake

Just to sleep again
