xvi. dead to me

when i woke up next to you
in that empty creek bed
there wasn’t much to do
but hang my head

i couldn’t catch my breath
not even a fragment
there was never any rest
when i was with you

cause you always wore me through
drenched my clothes and tore my shoes
i should have known that this couldn’t last
you’d tell me of your haunted past
and grew mad each time i left
missed me the moment that we met
said you were enamored in the same breath

i was worried there’d be comfort in your demise
cause there wasn’t any in your smile
but as you left
all i did was cry

so as the sun sets
like your fingertips
making their way down
i hope that you get
all the attention
you wanted
