"you"

the words you speak fall so effortlessly from your lips
how i’d love to understand the wrath of your tongue unmasked by sound
and wrap it around my own ideals of touch

i reach for a notion to pull you closer
but similar to the ocean, you shudder at the sight of the moon
and take me down like the undercurrent

the tide of your life and the stories that break
the wave of each high that i know will soon fade
the sobriety spoken but never attained
i shut it down quickly to avoid any pain

it’s a treachery to crush during the building of trust
and how fallible must i be to take no approach?

i wade in the waters until i’m sure of the touch
of the serpent of the sea, sure to take me
the brush of existentialism pulling me in like quicksand,
my shins splitting in the pressure of this earth
i began reaching for another world

my sovereign fortitude unbeknownst to most
i suppress each thought as the wave does the shore
treading lightly in a world unsure
i gasp for air as i’m taken under
